This is the landmark 1979 vinyl release of Philip Glass's groundbreaking opera Einstein on the Beach, catalogue number TOM-4-2901 on Tomato Records. Composed by the pioneering minimalist composer Philip Glass in collaboration with director Robert Wilson, this 4-LP box set captures the original 1976 production's complete music, featuring the Philip Glass Ensemble along with vocalists, organ, woodwinds, and the signature repetitive structures that define minimalist music and contemporary classical opera.
Einstein on the Beach is a revolutionary non-narrative opera in four acts, interspersed with "knee plays," where abstract themes of science, time, travel, and the atomic age unfold through hypnotic patterns, solfège syllables, spoken texts by Christopher Knowles, Samuel M. Johnson, and Lucinda Childs, and layered choral and instrumental textures. This recording preserves the full visionary soundscape of the work, including iconic sections like the building intensity of the train scenes, trial sequences, spaceship motifs, and transcendent ensemble passages that have influenced generations of experimental and ambient music.
Highly sought after by collectors of minimalist music, Philip Glass compositions, avant-garde opera, and rare 1970s vinyl box sets, this Tomato Records edition (TOM-4-2901) represents the first complete LP pressing of the opera, clocking in at approximately 165 minutes to fit the four-disc format. It's an essential piece for fans of modern classical, post-minimalism, and innovative 20th-century music.
Experience the mesmerizing, trance-like power of Einstein on the Beach in its original analog glory—perfect for audiophiles, opera enthusiasts, and anyone exploring the boundaries of classical music and experimental sound.
