The Germs are an American punk rock band from Los Angeles, California, originally active from 1977 to 1980. Germs have since reformed in 2005 with Shane West replacing Darby Crash. Their 1977 single, "Forming"/"Sexboy", is generally regarded as the first punk record from Los Angeles.[citation needed] The band's early lineup consisted of singer Darby Crash, guitarist Pat Smear, bassist Lorna Doom, and their most consistent drummer Don Bolles. They released only one album, 1979's (GI) (produced by Joan Jett) and were featured the following year in Penelope Spheeris' documentary film The Decline of Western Civilization, which chronicled the Los Angeles punk movement.
The Germs disbanded following Crash's suicide on December 7, 1980. Their music was influential to many later punk and alternative rock acts. Smear went on to greater notoriety performing with Nirvana and the Foo Fighters.
In 2005 actor Shane West was cast to play Crash in the Germs biographical film What We Do Is Secret. He performed with Smear, Doom, and Bolles at a production party for the film, after which the Germs re-formed with West as singer. The new lineup of the band has performed a number of tours in the United States, including performances on the 2006 and 2008 Warped Tours.
What We Do Is Secret is a 12" EP recorded by The Germs and released posthumously by Slash Records in the United States in 1981 as SREP-108. It was later also released in 1982 in Italy on the EXPANDEDMUSIC label as EX 20 Y. It is notable within their discography for containing a significantly different studio version of the track "Lexicon Devil" which does not appear on any other release, including the so-called "anthology" Germs (MIA) - The Complete Anthology. While The Germs also released a song titled "What We Do Is Secret," the song is on their 1979 (GI) LP, not on this EP. A film biography of vocalist Darby Crash was also titled What We Do Is Secret. The EP was later included on the CD Germs (MIA) - The Complete Anthology, excepting the above-noted ommission.
Slash Records is a record label in Los Angeles, originally specializing in local and punk rock bands. The label was formed in 1978 by Bob Biggs as an outgrowth of the Los Angeles-based fanzine, Slash. Biggs, a painter, initiated the label with a seven-inch single from The Germs in 1978. A full album from that band was released the next year, and X's Los Angeles followed in 1980. Until 1981, the label was distributed through Jem; when that company went bankrupt, Slash entered into a distribution deal with Warner Bros., a move that was among the first of the collaborations between independent and major labels in American punk music. During the time of this arrangement, the label released albums by prominent Los Angeles punk and Rock and roll bands, including Fear, The Blasters, L7 and Los Lobos.
