Already, due to past experiences and alot of hard work, they've amassed a vast collection of songs and instrumentals. Here in this album are some of their favorites. You can hear Bluegrass musicians pick from Portland East to Portland West, up to Canada, over in Europe, in Japan and all over the world. But the place where it’s best is where it was born, East Tennessee, Blue Ridge Bluegrass. Hard Times is the best new band to come along in a long time. All these folks are from right here where it all got started. When you are born and raised to something, you acquire a certain sensitivity to whatever it is. In the recordings in this album you can hear just that. In the voices, in the strings, between the notes, this is the sound of authentic East Tennessee music. Dave Carter WJCW/WQUT-FM Johnson City, Tenn. Now, I’d like you to meet these people. KEITH WILLIAMS He's from Chet Atkins hometown of Luttrell, Tenn. Been singing since the age of 6, when he also started carring a mandolin. Bill Monroe was and still is one of his beg heros. Keith's family was very musical and he grew up in the tradition of home-made music. At the time of this writing, he’s been fiddling for only 3 years. He is. however, one of the areas truly fine fiddlers. His mandolin is one custom made for him by Gene Horner of Rockwood, Tenn. MYNABELLE WILLIAMS She's one heck of a fine banjo and bass player A legendary area banjoist, Buddy Rose, got her started on the five string, which she played for a couple of years with the Smokey Mt. Travelers. Keith and Mynabelle first met when they both were in different bands and were booked for the same show. Music, you can say, brought them together. She's from Ottway, Tenn. G.C. MATLOCK G.C. plays the most solid rhythm guitar you'll hear anywhere. He's been playing it since he was old enough to walk and started on a Gene Autry model. He now owns a half dozen Martins. G.C. also does a fine job in those vocal harmonies. JERRY KEYS Jerry grew up, like Keith, in a musical family. He spent many hours listening to his father Jay, an old-time fiddler, and Uncle Will Keys, a two-finger clawhammer specialist, run through countless renditions of countless traditional melodies. Jerry started on the banjo when he was 14 years old. His style is all his own. Born and raised in Gray Station, Tenn; he plays an original flathead 1935 Gibson RB-3. He also builds and repairs banjos. SUSIE KEYS Susie has a voice that absolutely sparkles. She also doubles on bass. Her dad, George Hazelwood plays mandolin and sings in Carl Story s band. R.
