The Southernaires Gospel Choir had only planned to present THE WITNESS on three dates, during the Easter season in 1981. However, the annointing, quality of production, and enthusiasm of the first thousand people that attended caused such a volume of personal witness in Lenoir, that the musical had to be held over for four additional concerts. More than 3500 people attended the Lenoir presentation. This not only set a record in Caldwell County for attendance at a religious gathering, but caused so much interest in the local community that the local Lenoir News-Topic did front page feature articles on the Witness, and radio stations carried the tapes of the performances. Requests came from church groups, individuals, and youth groups to repeat the per- formances over and over. Visitors came from as far away as New Jersey and New England to see the special presentation. More than ninety at the Lenoir Community Church combined their talents to produce the 1981 WITNESS, and have formed a permanent drama associa- tion, which will be presenting the WITNESS each year during the week proceeding Easter Sunday. The success of the Witness caused congratulations to be sent from Senator Jesse Helms, Congressman James Broyhill, and Governor Jim Hunt of North Carolina. This album is a LIVE concert, recorded on Sunday, April 26th at Lenoir Community Church. Due to the impossibility to record the complete concert, we included the main renditions, as an effort to give the hearer of this record, the feeling of being in a live Southernaires concert. Special musical and acting credits go to Tim Hawkins, who carries the lead in the part of Peter, the narrator and does most of the male solo work. Others singing solo parts include: Sandra Arnett as Mary; Michale LaBrose as John; Tracy Smith as James; Gail Houston as the mother of James and John; and Steve Critz as Judas. Although he never sings or speaks a word on the album, Jerrold Stevens did a tremendous job as portraying Jesus. Much of the ap- plause heard is when he enters, raises a dead boy to life, and stands resurrected at the sound of the trumpet, heard on side two. The Witness is under the direction of pastor Bob Parmley, who formed the Southernaires in 1961. The author of plays and pageants, and arranger of music, Bob was used of the Lord to direct the production in such a way that Jesus was seen and loved more as Saviour and conqueror of the grave and death.
