Various Artists – “Boogie Blues: Women Sing and Play Boogie-Woogie” (Rosetta 1309). This 1983 release is part of the Women’s Heritage Series and includes 16 works by dofferemt female artists from 1930-61 with extensive liner notes. There is a wide variety of material ranging from a Lil Armstrong piano solo from the soundtrack of the TV show Chicago & That Jazz in 1961 to Memphis Minnie, Ella Fitzgerald ("Cow Cow Boogie") and Dorothy Donegan in 1942. Other performers include Georgia White, Helen Humes, Lucille Bogan, Hazel Scott, Merline Johnson, Sweet Georgia Brown, Gladys Bentley, Christine Chatman, Hadda Brooks, Myrtle Jenkins, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Mary Lou Williams.
