Description
This is a set of TWO 12 inch ALUMINUM RADIO TRANSCRIPTION DISKS of a show called THE FOX FUR TRAPPERS, broadcast on FRIDAY, AUGUST 9, 1935. This was broadcast over WEAF in New York City. They are two-sided and plays at 78 RPM. It also plays from the Inside Out! This is the complete broadcast of this program! The featured artist on this show is MORTON DOWNEY Sr., one of the finest tenors of all time. He is nothing less than amazing on these shows! I have quite a few of his 78's, and his singing is wonderful. But on these live broadcasts, the power and total command of his voice at this time gave me a whole new respect for his talent..!
As far as I know, these are the ONLY known copies of this radio program!! I would welcome knowing of any other existing copies... The Musical Director of this program was BERT HIRSCH, whom many collectors will remember from the HIT-OF-THE-WEEK paper records that came out during the beginning of the depression.
Many years ago, I went to an estate auction in Connecticut, and purchased a couple of large boxes of old Radio Transcriptions that belonged to the estate of BERT HIRSCH. They had been sealed for many years. I paid a great deal for these as there was some clown with deep pockets who wanted them to nail to the walls of his music room for effect!! Even after the auction he wanted to buy a few from me for that reason...didn't happen. As I don't have a transcription player here, I rigged one together so I could hear a few of these recordings. The sound quality is just amazing! I only listened to a few. I have looked everywhere to see if these shows exist anywhere else and came up with nothing. So these recordings are quite possibly the ONLY SURVIVING COPIES of the FOX FUR TRAPPERS broadcasts! The shows included commercials for...Furs! BERT HIRSCH was a violinist, bandleader and musical contractor for many years in the New York area. He used the top men of the era like Bunny Berigan, the Dorsey Brothers and many more on his records and radio broadcasts. I read that a very drunk FATS WALLER performed on the FOX FUR TRAPPERS program....once. It wasn't on the couple shows that I played, but there many here that I'll be listing that I haven't been able to listen to! Why am I letting these historical recordings go?? Divorce, 'nuff said.
CONDITION - PLEASE READ! These are Aluminum Disks that are over 75 years old and had been stored away during all of that time. They NEED work! They have spots on many of them. Some sides play quite well. I have only heard a few sides of these broadcasts, and can't really say who or what is on them besides musical numbers and commercials for I.J. FOX FURS. The sound and fidelity of these early broadcasts is nothing less than amazing! But they need restoring. I have done nothing to clean these recordings...thought it best to leave that up to those who want them. They should be preserved for future generations to enjoy. I wish I had one of those scanners for records!
I took the photos of these recordings outside so you would have a better idea of how they look like and the spots on aluminum look like as well.
I'll be listing quite a few of these Very Rare Radio Recordings that were made by and for BERT HIRSCH, so keep checking my listings.
