This sale is for both JANET GREENE 45rpm Chantico 1965 records and the original jackets that are autographed by Janet Greene. This sale includes Chantico Records Side 1 #TB-2000 Fascist Threat, and Side 2 #TB-2001 Commie Lies along with Chantico Records Side 1 #TB-2499 Termites, and Side 2 #TB-2500 Comrade's Lament. These are the ORIGINAL 45's and jackets. They have been in a family member's record collection, and they were the original owners. The family members obtained these records directly from Janet Greene at a political rally in the '60's. The only authentication of the signatures that I have is my personal knowledge of where and how the family members obtained the records. These have been stored along with *many* old records in their collection indoors, and always in a smoke free environment and they are being sold as part of an estate sale. They are not being sold by some liquidator or having been purchased at some flea market or garage sale. The records look to me like they have rarely been played. There are some slight scuffs and light scratches (any specs that might be seen in the photos are from my scanner). I'm not an expert in grading these so I cannot make a determination of grading, and I am unable to play them since I parted with phonographs long ago.... Please see the photos. The records are a unique and interesting part of American history and should be a great addition to an Americana or political history collector, regardless of political leaning.
(Please note: The scan showing the two record jackets together has the right hand photo looking very pixelated and like a checkerboard pattern. That is a fault of my scanner apparently. The single photo of that jacket that I've included here does not have those flaws. The actual jacket is a standard black and white photo that is clear like the single photo.) The jackets are in very good condition.

Janet Greene was an American folk singer who had a whirlwind career performing anti-communist songs in the mid-1960s. Greene was born Janet Marcum in Ohio in 1930. She married businessman David Greenroos while a teenager, then worked as a children’s performer and television host in her native state. In 1964 anti-communist activists persuaded Greene to relocate to California. She wrote and recorded eight political songs, one of the first of which was Commie Lies (“Satan has a new disguise, be careful of the Commie Lies, swallow them and freedom dies”). Greene’s sweet-voiced but politically barbed lyrics saw her dubbed the “anti-Baez”. Poor Left-winger, which attacks liberals and socialists, is typical of her songs.

In the early to mid-Sixties, the anti-communist movement was trembling before the power and popularity of singers like Pete Seeger, Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. Searching for a solution to this problem, Dr. Fred Schwarz recruited one Janet Greene (a Joan Baez fan herself) to be the "Musical Director" of his organization, The Christian Anti-Communism Crusade (CACC). As his Musical Director (or "Anti-Baez," as he referred to her), Greene converted Schwarz's red-baiting tirades into pithy right-wing folk songs. From 1964 to 1966, Schwarz released eight songs by Greene on the CACC's Chantico label, and then in 1966, he reissued all eight songs as part of his 4-LP set, Nature of Communism Series.

Janet Greene's recorded musical output was limited to just eight songs during her anti-Communist heyday working for Dr. Fred Schwarz as Music Director at the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade (CACC). These "golden period" tunes were produced by Del Katcher and released as singles in 1966 on Chantico, the CACC house label. The tracks were also issued collectively, as an album side (Janet Greene Sings), on the Schwarz box set "What Is Communism?," a collection of his lectures on the Red Menace (Chantico UB2160; 1966). Ironically, it is Greene's musical contribution to Schwarz's spoken word miasma that makes the set a collector's item today, not the paranoid ruminations of the good doctor. The blatantly confrontational titles that Greene cut during this era (Commie Lies, Comrade's Lament, etc.) were packaged with covers featuring the sunny and optimistic visage of the artist. It is a delightfully subversive contrast that makes the music all that more enjoyable.
