 "Sheik Yerbouti" is a double LP album by Frank Zappa, released in March 1979. It's a highly significant album in his discography for several reasons:

• First Release on Zappa Records: It marked Zappa's independence from Warner Bros. Records, being the inaugural release on his own Zappa Records label.
• Comedic Emphasis: The album placed a greater emphasis on the comedic and satirical aspects of Zappa's lyrics than many of his previous works, a trend that would continue in much of his subsequent output.
• Commercial Success & Mainstream Attention: "Sheik Yerbouti" became one of Zappa's best-selling albums, garnering considerable mainstream attention. It featured some of his most recognized (and often controversial) songs, including:
  • "Dancin' Fool": A Grammy-nominated satire of disco music that became an FM radio hit.
  • "Bobby Brown Goes Down": A sexually explicit and highly controversial song that, despite being banned from US airplay, became a massive hit, particularly in Scandinavia.
  • "Jewish Princess": Another controversial track that drew attention from the Anti-Defamation League, to which Zappa famously refused to apologize.
• Recording Approach: The album is primarily composed of live material recorded during Zappa's 1977 and 1978 tours (mostly at the Hammersmith Odeon in London and The Palladium in NYC), with extensive studio overdubs. Zappa also experimented with a technique he called "xenochrony," where he combined unrelated live performances of different instruments into a new, cohesive track (e.g., "Rubber Shirt").
• Musical Virtuosity & Satire: Beyond the lyrical content, the album showcases Zappa's exceptional guitar work and the tight musicianship of his band at the time, which included Adrian Belew (rhythm guitar, vocals), Terry Bozzio (drums, vocals), and Patrick O'Hearn (bass, vocals). The music itself often parodies various genres while maintaining Zappa's signature complex arrangements and quirky sounds.
