Description
This lot contains two Columbia 10-inch 78 RPM records, both by Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra, and both on the pictorial "potato head" label. Three of the four sides are considered "hot" enough for inclusion in Brian Rust's "Hot Jazz Discography" and all four sides are listed in the Sudhalter & Evans discography "Bix - Man and Legend." In the order shown in the pictures (with some discographical information in parentheses), they are:
Columbia # 1683-D -- "Makin' Whoopee!" and "I'm Bringing a Red Red Rose." (The former is included in the Rust Discography, with vocals by Bing Crosby and a recording date in December, 1928. According to Sudhalter & Evans, Bix Beiderbecke does not appear on either side.)
Columbia # 1444-D -- "That's My Weakness Now" and "'Taint So, Honey, 'Taint So." (Recorded in June, 1928, both sides are included in the Rust Discography, with Bing Crosby credited as at least one of the vocalists on both sides, and with Bix Beiderbecke playing cornet and Frank Trumbauer playing C-melody saxophone. Sudhalter & Evans also confirm that Beiderbecke and Trumbauer are both present and list them as soloists on both sides.)
Visually, the former is the shinier of the two, but they both have some visible scuffs and scratches. Apart from a single forward jump a few bars in from the start of "Making Whoopee", they both play through without skipping or repeating on my Audio-Technica turntable, and mostly just typical light background noise, with some scattered pops and clicks and ticking. Because of variations in tracking ability, filtering technology and needle weights, I can offer no guarantees as to how well they will play on your equipment.
