200 MOTELS - FRANK ZAPPA & The MOTHERS of INVENTION, Zubin Mehta and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra
Sealed copy of the very rare Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention album 200 Motels. This is the very first album released on the highly collectible Trade Mark of Quality (TMQ) label.
Album captures Zappa and the Mothers playing LIVE with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra on May 15, 1970. Please note this is not the 200 Motels soundtrack. Also see Notes 1&2 below.
Vinyl: Mint/Sealed. Some collectors report that early TMQ press runs were on red vinyl and later runs on black. Unfortunately I have no idea which vinyl this album might be.
Label: Trademark of Quality Records / 71010 / 1971. See Note 3 below.
Cover: No splits, holes or notches. Front has partial stamp of title and TMQ "Pig" sticker. A pricelist insert is located on back. Shrink has split on left side and lower left corner. Slight bend on upper right corner. Due to being nearly 40 years old and shelf wear as described above, I would rate the cover as VG++ to VG+++. See Note 4 below.
Musicians: Frank Zappa, Ray Collins, Jeff Simmons, Aynsley Dunbar, Billy Mundi, Ian Underwood, Don Preston, Motorhead Sherwood and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Zubin Mehta.
Length: 45 minutes.
Tracks: There is no track list. The record has no track separation and both sides contain more or less non-stop music. Reportedly the album contains, but not in strict order, the following pieces: Pound for a Brown, Oh No, Envelopes, Like It Or Not, Little House I Used to Live In, Tuna Sandwich, Redneck Eats, World's Greatest Sinner, Holiday in Berlin, Inca Roads, Strictly Genteel, Duke of Prunes, Who Needs the Peace Corps?, Pound for a Brown, What's The Name Of Your Group, Dance Of The Rock'n'Roll Interviewers, and The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue
Notes:
1. From THE REAL FRANK ZAPPA BOOK, p. 109:
Sometime in 1970, I had an offer for a major concert performance of the orchestral music accumulating in my closet. During the M.O.I.'s first five years, I had carried with me, on the road, masses of manuscript paper, and, whenever there was an opportunity, scribbled stuff on it. This material eventually became the score for 200 Motels (based on an estimate of the number of gigs we played in the first five years--forty jobs per year?).
The performance was to be held at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion (a basketball arena seating about fourteen thousand people), with Zubin Mehta conducting the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. A pretty big deal.

With TMQ's foundation, all pre-TMQ releases were assigned numbers in the 71000 series in approximately chronological order. Though the first real TMQ release was Frank Zappa's 200 Motels [Live with Zubin Mehta & the LA Philharmonic],
