Description
Over the next few weeks I will be posting some vintage Bollywood 78s from the 1940s and 1950s. Some titles are common and others are very rare. Most are on the His Master's Voice (HMV) label and pressed by the Gramophone Co. of India Ltd. Very few are on the Columbia and Hindustan labels. Our collector may have had ties to the radio business because some of the titles are promotional or have alternate labels to the commercially released singles. In addition, our collector made several attempts to categorize/organize his collection over the years, so some titles have numbered stickers on the labels. Wherever possible I have documented or photographed these.
The 78s vary in condition from EX (excellent) to VG- (poor). They were stored in the original paper sleeves, so are mostly scratch-free but need a good cleaning. These are all hard shellac 78s and not pressed on vinyl. I have not made any attempt to clean these 78s whatsoever. They will be shipped insured in new acid-free inner sleeves. UPS insures all packages for $100. You can increase this insurance to $300 for an additional $4.
We are getting to the very rare and valuable titles in the collection. Our collector had fewer than 100 LP's but those that he did have were very well kept in their original sleeves and show very little evidence of play. This lot includes the 1958 soundtrack to the film Mother India with music by Naushad and lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni. The soundtrack features Lata Mangeshkar, Mukesh, Mohammed Rafi, Shamshad Begum and others and is the original Indian pressing on the Odeon label. As you know, many Bollywood titles have somewhat flimsy jackets but this one is in excellent condition (see pics) and is valued between $40-60 on Discogs. The jacket is very white with a crisp red, looks amazing. The second title is The Great Music Of India from 1958 on the Music Of India label. No artists are credited, however the performances and sound are excellent and the pressing is very thick and heavy. This title is valued at $100 on Discogs, but another seller has this for $40 here on eBay. I wish the jacket was in better condition, there is a seam split at the top and a clumsy tape repair. However, the LP itself is pristine and appears unplayed (see pics).
