ULTRA RARE RECORDING FEATURING KAREL HUSA CONDUCTING THE COLLEGE OF WOOSTER CONCERT CHOIR AND ORCHESTRA PERFORMING KING DAVID BY ARTHUR HONEGGER. Produced by Jennings Recording Service. Featuring Janice Schmidt, Soprano, Paul Clarke, Contralto, Glenn Schnittke, Tenor, and Beverly Barksdale, Narrator. There is no date of production, Worldcat provides a date of 196?.
Two of the LPs are of King David, with the 4th side unused (no recording on it). THERE IS A 3rd BONUS LP, also produced by Jennings Recording Service, and featuring religious songs by The College of Wooster Westminster Church Choir, with a date of 1959 in parenthesis.
All records look in EXCELLENT OR BETTER CONDITION. All were stored in original rice paper inner sleeves. There was some splits on the sleeve, but they are generally clean and solid. There are a few light marks around the spindle hole of the King David LPs, no spindle hole marks in the 3rd Westminster Church Choir LP. I will grade the King David LPs as VG++, with the Westminster Church Choir LP as NM.
The jacket was in Poor Condition, but the gatefold sleeves were only partially split and served to protect the LPs in their rice paper inner sleeves. There was only information on the front cover - inside the gatefold and the back jacket were white. There are stains and age-toning around the edges, no water impacts. The top edges of the gatefold were not split, the bottom edges were split in the 4-6" range, and the top half of the spine was damaged - see listing photo. There is a complete insert with the 27 cuts of King David described, with a loose inside page around a folded insert. There are no attributions in this insert, only the program for King David. It had age-toning around the paper edges.
ULTRA RARE RECORDING FEATURING ACCLAIMED CONDUCTOR KAREL HUSA. On this conductor and composer from Wikipedia:
"Karel Husa (August 7, 1921 – December 14, 2016) was a Czech-born classical composer and conductor, winner of the 1969 Pulitzer Prize for Music and 1993 University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition. In 1954, he immigrated to the United States and became an American citizen in 1959."
There is no citation of this performance of King David on Wikipedia. I did find this small entry on Google Books from a book titled, Karel Husa: A Bio-bibliography by Susan Hayes Hitchens:
"McCall, Raymond G. "Contemporary 'King David' gets enthusiastic response." Daily Record (Wooster, OH), 5 March, 1960.
A review of a performance of Honegger's King David, conducted by Husa. "...he revealed some subtle rhythmic effects...that are not fully evident in the recording conducted by Honegger himself. For once, the shopworn title of Maestro is well deserved."
