Lot of 4 WPA "Works Progress Administration / Works Projects Administration" Radio Show Transcription Discs. A total of four complete 15 minute radio programs on these four, one sided, 16 inch, 33 1/3 rpm discs. These discs were issued to radio stations for broadcast only and not available to the general public, very rare!
1939 Series Program #3 “Modern Rhythm Ensemble Of Boston” conducted by Frank Ward. Music includes “Deep Purple”, “Just A Song At Twilight” vocal by Chorus, “I See Your Face Before Me” vocal by Chorus. Program includes announcements for The Works Progress Administration. 15 minutes
1941 Series Program #13 “Unites States Army Band” under the direction of Captain Thomas F. Darcy. Music includes “West Point March”, “Boys Of The Old Brigade”, “Adoration, Based On The Theme ‘America The Beautiful’”, “Up The Street”?. Guest General George C. Marshall who appears on the program gives an announcement for The Works Progress Administration. 15 minutes
1941 Series Program #21 “United States Army Band” under the direction of Captain Thomas F. Darcy. Music includes “Purple Pageant March”, “Cripple Creek”, “Riders For The Flag”. Guest Henry S. Dennison who appears on the program gives an announcement for The Works Progress Administration. 15 minutes
1941 Series Program #24. This is a special Christmas Program featuring The Massachusetts WPA Symphony Orchestra with The American Folk Singers of Boston. The orchestra is conducted by Attilio Poto and the singers are directed by Thomas Johnson. The performance is from Brattle Hall in Cambridge, MA. Music includes “The Dream Of Christmas”? (featuring “Good King Wenceslas”, etc.), “Pastoral Symphony From The Messiah” by Handel. Guest Robert E. Sherwood (American playwright) appears on the program and gives an announcement for The Works Progress Administration. 15 minutes
These are excellent depression era broadcasts featuring many musicians who were employed by The WPA
It's interesting to note that the 1939 radio program is produced by the "Works Progress Administration", and the 1941 programs were produced by "The Works Projects Administration" as the name of the organization was changed in 1939
These one sided discs are stored two discs in each sleeve
Discs are in good to very good condition with very good sound. These discs have lots of scratches which cause surface noise but no skips. Please note that most standard turntables will not play 16 inch radio transcriptions. I will make CD copies of all 4 programs for the buyer only.
