Description

Today Bernard Herrmann is mostly noted for his film music (especially, perhaps, for his music for Hitchcock's PSYCHO)....but the man was a very accomplished composer and here's his only opera: WUTHERING HEIGHTS. This is the first recording of the work on 4 LPs (PYE label) CONDUCTED BY HERRMANN HIMSELF. This is very beautiful, atmospheric music...Renee Fleming has even recorded an aria from the work...but I know of no real professional production of the piece. This was a great disappointment to Herrmann himself I believe. So it's very nice indeed to have Herrmann himself in charge of this project. This is the original LP release on the PYE label and it has become something of a rarity these days. The cast includes Morag Beaton as Catherine and Donald Bell as Heathcliff. Others include: John Kitchiner as Hindley, Pamela Bowden as Isabella, Joseph Ward as Edgar, and Elizabeth Bainbridge as Nelly. The Pro Arte Orchestra is conducted by Bernard Herrmann. The set comes with a booklet which includes the complete sung English text with a GERMAN TRANSLATION. The records are in excellent shape; they have been stored in a closet for over 20 years or so and I haven't had a turntable to play them on in longer than that. I'm just doing a clearing out. Some pages in the booklet are coming a bit loose, but otherwise fine. Free shipping in U.S.
