Journey's fourth album, Infinity, was released in January 1978 on Columbia Records. It was the band's first album with vocalist Steve Perry.
Looking for a stronger lead vocalist, Journey briefly enlisted front man Robert Fleischman and even recorded a few tracks, one of which, "For You," which later appeared on the Time3 collection, and Fleischman's solo album, Perfect Stranger. Fleischman was soon thereafter replaced by Steve Perry due to musical and management differences. Fleischman would later resurface as the first singer in the Vinnie Vincent Invasion.
With songs like "Feeling That Way" and "Anytime," Perry shared the vocals with former lead singer and keyboardist Gregg Rolie.
"Patiently" was the first song Perry and Neal Schon wrote together. Perry wrote the lyrics, in which he expresses the sadness of being on the road and away from home, while also expressing admiration for the band's fans. Schon wrote the music for the song. Other popular singles included "Lights" and "Wheel in the Sky." The latter was co-written with temporary front man Fleischman.
Journey's manager, Herbie Herbert, enlisted producer Roy Thomas Baker to engineer "Infinity." This produced a layered sound approach, similar to his work with Queen, as demonstrated on tracks such as "Winds of March." In addition, Baker's method of stacked harmonies, notable on several other albums he produced, became trademarks of Journey's sound. Baker achieved this by having each vocalist (usually Perry and Rolie, sometimes joined by Valory and/or Schon) sing each harmony part in unison. This had the effect of making three or four voices sound like more, and is notable on the songs "Feeling that Way" and "Anytime," which are often played in tandem consecutively on radio stations.
The addition of Perry led to a more mainstream sound, and helped Journey attain their highest chart success to date. Infinity marked the last appearance of drummer Aynsley Dunbar.

Departure is the name of Journey's sixth album. It was released in March 1980 on the Columbia Records label.
Departure would be the band's highest charting album to date, giving Journey their first appearance in the top 10 of the Billboard album charts, peaking at #8. The album includes "Any Way You Want It", the lead off track and top 25 single.
The album featured an edgier sound, thanks partly to the "live in studio" way the songs were recorded. The band went into The Automatt studio with 19 tracks, eventually trimming down to 12.
The album would mark the last full time studio album appearance of founding member Gregg Rolie, and his penultimate recording with the band: his final contributions would appear on Dream, After Dream, a soundtrack album to the Japanese film of the same name, which would also be released in 1980. Rolie had become tired of life on the road and decided to leave the band after assisting in the selection of his replacement, Jonathan Cain, then of The Babys. Rolie sang lead vocals on only one song on Departure— the ballad "Someday Soon".
The Departure Tour was one of the first Journey shows to feature pyrotechnics, as a measure before the line "That gunshot echoed through the town" on the song Line of Fire, a burst of fire came through either side of the stage.

Captured is the title of Journey's first live album. Recorded during their Departure tour, it was released in February 1981 on the Columbia Records label. The album went on to sell two million copies, reaching #9 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
The song "Dixie Highway", had not previously been recorded on a Journey album. Closing the album is the lone studio track, "The Party's Over (Hopelessly in Love)".
In the liner notes, the album is dedicated to AC/DC lead singer Bon Scott who died in February 1980. Scott is referred to as "a friend from the highway", most likely referencing AC/DC's 1979 album "Highway to Hell".
This was the last Journey album for founder Gregg Rolie.

Escape (sometimes stylized as E5C4P3) is Journey's seventh studio album (and eighth overall), released on July 31, 1981. The album features four hit Billboard Hot 100 singles - "Don't Stop Believin'" (#9), "Who's Crying Now" (#4), "Still They Ride" (#19) and "Open Arms" (#2) - plus rock radio staples like "Stone in Love" and "Mother, Father".
The album was a massive success, being certified nine times platinum by the RIAA.
Escape was the band's first album with keyboardist Jonathan Cain who replaced founding keyboardist Gregg Rolie after he left the band at the end of 1980. The album was co-produced by former Lynyrd Skynyrd soundman Kevin Elson and one-time Queen engineer Mike Stone, who also engineered the album.
An Atari 2600 game, Journey Escape, was made based on the album.
Mike DeGagne of Allmusic awarded Escape four-and-a-half stars out of five, writing, "The songs are timeless, and as a whole, they have a way of rekindling the innocence of youthful romance and the rebelliousness of growing up, built from heartfelt songwriting and sturdy musicianship". Colin Larkin awarded the album four out of five stars in the 2002 edition of the Virgin Encyclopedia of Popular Music.
In 1988, Kerrang! readers voted Escape the greatest Arena-oriented Rock album of all time. The following year, the magazine ranked Escape #32 in "The 100 Greatest Heavy Metal Albums of All Time".[6] A 2000 Virgin poll saw the album voted the 24th greatest Heavy Metal/Alternative Rock album of all time. In 2001, Classic Rock ranked the album #22 in "The 100 Greatest Rock Albums of All Time". In 2006, the same publication recognized the importance of the album's contribution to popular music in the 1980s by including it in their "The 200 Greatest Albums of the 80s" as one of the twenty greatest albums of 1981. Originally a progressive rock band, Journey experienced strong resentment from many music critics after they embraced the pop sensibilities of the 1980s with smash hits like "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Open Arms"; Q magazine ranked Escape 15th in its "Records it's OK to Love" in 2006.
