Saying that Five Royales were a critical R&B band and that their influence far exceeded their modest commercial stature and market appeal is like saying that God is somewhat powerful. Five Royales were simply the best and the greatest of the R&B/Doo Wop/Vocal Harmony groups of the 1950's. What makes their music so extraordinary fresh, even today, almost 55 years later, are the invigorating, truly passionate vocals (check out "Messing Up" or "Tears of Joy" from their previous album, "Dedicated to you"), guitar licks that were theretofore unheard of in their inventiveness, hard edge, and fuzz (word has it that Lonnie Mack played guitar on many of their sessions, and we find the lore utterly compelling; certainly no black performer played guitar so aggressively until Jimi Hendrix arose, some ten years later) and edgy, bouncy, suggestive rhythms which were all but banned during late Eisenhower age.  Finding a Five Royales album in decent shape - whether on King or on Apollo label - is like winning a jackpot. It simply never happens!.

And finally, lest we forget, Five Royales songs have been covered by many an up-and-coming black performer, such as Ray Charles, James Brown or Shirelles, among others.

Track listing: Your only love - The real thing - Don't let it be in vain - Do the cha cha cherry - Double or nothing - Mohawk squaw - How I wonder - I need your lovin' baby - The feeling is real - Tell the Truth - My wants for love - The slummer the slum - Do unto you - I ain't getin' caught - When I get like this - Monkey hips and rice.

The group's second album for the King label is not quite the soaring achievement that Dedicated to You was, but it will do and then some. From slow romantic ballads to pure blues, the group offers an extraordinary range of catchy, eminently danceable tracks -- 16 in all -- and all worth hearing more than once. Opening with the melodic ballad "Your Only Love," the quintet hits its stride with "The Real Thing," a pounding shouter that's heavy on the rhythm guitar and offers a killer sax break -- "Don't Let It Be in Vain," which follows, is a slow soul ballad with some searing lead guitar courtesy of Lowman Pauling, whose axe also shows up at some strategic moments on "The Cha Cha Cherry." "Double or Nothing" is more of a pure vocal showcase, while the relentlessly upbeat and funny "Mohawk Squaw" seems to bring the group into Cadillacs and Coasters territory, where they acquit themselves well. And then there's the mid-tempo jewel "I Need Your Lovin' Baby," which shows the group near its peak vocally and instrumentally. The whole second side of the original LP is made up of songs that could have been hits or solid B-sides of hits, including "Tell the Truth," which Ray Charles would later cover, and Pauling's killer solo on "The Slumber the Slum." The third-to-last track, "I Ain't Getting Caught," carries them into novelty material of unexpected smoothness and subtlety, and then the group takes a totally unexpected detour into slow blues with "When I Get Like This." Couple that with a really cool cover design and this record is a keeper

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           This is the original flat-edge pressing.

(d)          Two small inspection stamps noted on the labels (one on each side)

(e)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(f)            This is believed to be an ANALOG recording (we are not sure)

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL GLOSSY, LIGHTLY LAMINATED, COVER)

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (between 4 and 6 inches  / 10 to 15 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 4 and 6 inches  / 10 to 15 centimeters)' This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-        The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on the front side  (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a small quality control (inspection) stamp on the back panel

-        Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2 (front side) and 5 (back side)

-        Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No writing

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
