Stokowski. The Legend who conducted the orchestra in Walt Disney's FANTASIA. Who recorded Rachmaninoff's Piano Concertos with Rachmaninoff. And after handling the Philadelphia Orchestra over to Eugene Ormandy, released a series of superbly recorded and often definitive records for a special new subdivision of London Records, the Phase 4 Recordings. Even the packaging was special (photo). Where most conductors disdained the mixing studio and recording engineers, Stokowski took an active interest and reveled in the process of creating outstanding recordings. The result is that Stokowski's Phase 4 Recordings are highly sought after and sound fantastic. And here we have five of the best: Stravinsky Firebird plus two outstanding generous fillers, Tchaikovsky Romeo and Juliet, Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition (A stereo showpiece that will make your stereo show its stuff!), highlights from Wagner's Ring of the Niebuling, and Tchaikovsky 1812 Overture plus Borodin Polovetsian Dances. This is a nearly ideal collection of Stereo Blockbuster Showpiece Masterpieces. Again, if you have a good system and want to hear what it can really do, these records will blow you away.
