Description
This lot contains six 33 rpm records by Duke Ellington.
The first four are radio transcription records of 15-minute radio programs featuring Duke Ellington and issued by the Social Security Administration of the United States Department of Health and Welfare. The series is titled "The Genius of Duke", and we do not have a complete set, so listen carefully as we go through them one by one.
The first one - the only one with a cover, shown in the second and third pictures - is labeled with the product number DHEW (SSA) 74-10750, suggesting a 1974 date of issue. It is single-sided and the 15-minute program, labeled "Demo", contains an introduction and Social Security announcements by Hal Jackson, and three Duke Ellington tunes ("Prelude to a Kiss", "Take the A Train" and "I Like the Sunrise"), with comments by Duke Ellington on each one.
The other three are in similar format, but double-sided, with one 15-minute program or "show" on each side. They are as found, in plain white inner sleeves. I believe they were originally boxed in sets of six, but we don't have any of the original boxes. And there's some really good music on them, so I've listed all the titles:
Show # 3 (Satin Doll, Come Sunday, Portrait of the Lion) and Show # 4 (I Let a Song Go out of My Heart, Daybreak Express, Jump for Joy).
Show # 9 (In a Mellotone, In a Sentimental Mood, Cottontail) and Show # 10 (Sophisticated Lady, Rockin' in Rhythm, Happy-Go-Lucky Local).
Show # 11 (Caravan, Just Squeeze Me, The Gal from Joe's) and Show # 12 (Solitude, C Jam Blues, Cop Out).
Also included (pictures 5 through 7) is Atlantic LP # SMAS-93779, "New Orleans Suite" by Duke Ellington. It is dated 1971 and comes with a gatefold cover and contains sleeve notes by Ellington biographer Stanley Dance.
And finally (last two pictures), we're including the Jazz Panorama 10" LP # 1811, "Braggin' in Brass with Duke, Volume 2" by Duke Ellington's Orchestra. the line-up includes Duke Ellington, Johnny Hodges, Cootie Williams and Barney Bigard.
The four transcription records look to be in about EX condition, still beautifully shiny, and with hardly any visible surface wear. "New Orleans Suite" is closer to VG+, still shiny but some visible surface scuffs and scratches. And "Braggin' in Brass" is a step or two lower, with the track "Buffet Flat" completely unplayable due to a spiral scratch that causes multiple skips and repeats.
I've played a few of the sides on my Bang and Olufsen turntable, and, with the exception of "Buffet Flat" described above, there are no skips or jumps and varying degrees of audible background noise. Because of variations in tracking ability, filtering technology and needle weights, I can offer no guarantees as to how well they will play on your equipment.
