MARX MOVIE MADNESS

MARX MOVIE MADNESS (MR-1097) was issued by RADIOLA Records in 1979. As with all their LPs it contains about an hour of programming.

Condition of source material (ancient radio transcription discs) is quite good. There's no scratch clicks or distortion from groove damage. All five of these film advertisements are excellent examples of promotional puffery, delivered like carnival barker spiels by trumpeting announcers.

The spot for "Go West" is unique, for the script includes participation by Groucho and Chico Marx. "A Day at the Races" contains less than half the original 13:30 broadcast. (Cut are two Allan Jones songs.)

Bing Crosby Bob Hope with Dorothy Lamour

In 1946, Bing Crosby, long-time host of NBC's "Kraft Music Hall," had a new network (ABC) and program, "Philco Radio Time," with announcer Ken Carpenter, plus John Scott Trotter's orchestra. (Crosby's Philco show was the first ever to be pre-recorded.) Two years later, Bob Hope, long associated with Pepsodent, was hosting "The New Swan Show" on NBC, with vocalist Doris Day, backing group Four Hits and a Miss, Les Brown's band and announcer Hy Averback.

The RADIOLA LP entitled BOB HOPE & BING CROSBY (MR-1044) features one example of each of these shows. They're complete broadcasts (with sponsor spots) that run just seconds under a half-hour each. Audio quality of both is outstanding.

Perhaps due to RADIOLA's back cover typo that lists Bob's "New Swan Show" episode with Crosby as being broadcast on November 7, 1948 instead of a month later (which is correct), web listings for this program widely cite the November date. (See how easy it is to distort history?) BTW, the last two minutes of the Hope program verify it's actually from 12/7, for Bob comments that there's only 15 shopping days 'til Christmas.
