"You've Got Me In The Palm Of Your Hand" encapsulates everything that made Northern Soul such a magnet for me in the early 70s. Donald Lee Richardson had just two releases in his short career, and both were put out on the Soulville label (the first has since become a very scarce deep soul collectable). Apart from that, Soulville has only given collectors a few 45s to slaver over. The two best are both by The Soulville All Stars, and include the superb "I'm Gonna Get To You". There are also some lesser-known dancers by Watson & The Sherlocks, and Renee Perri, a dab of funk from Cha Cha Hogan, and deep by Bobby Fulton. Apart from that, about two-thirds of Soulville's output is either easy to pick up, or of little interest. A few are mysteries? Who were The Maniguit Specials? Or Magdison & Wrube? Two numbers (1009 and 1018) aren't even known.
The Soulville label operated out of an address in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and also ran one of my favourite little indies. Jay-Walking is a fine source of uptempo soul music, as well as quality slower material. Singles by Hank Sample, Ray Gant & The Arabian Knights, Eddie Parker, and (of course) The Continental 4, are worth looking for.
"You Got Me In The Palm Of Your Hand" was on the B-side of Soulville's final release. It appeared at a time when soul was drifting away from the pounding on-the-fours beat that had been popular in the mid-60s. Nevertheless, trends were cast aside for this furious stomper, and dance floors were always full when it later surfaced in the UK. Demand was sated by the appearance of suspicious-looking white label copies, that had the same track on both sides. Beware of these boots - the quality of the sound is not that good. Strangely, the names of Joe Broussard and Wardell Quezergue appear in the writer credits. That would seem to give the song a New Orleans source, yet the Soulville label was based in Harrisburg - a long way from the Crescent City.
This one is currently priced by Manship at £75 for a minter (£100 for a promo).
The vinyl has just a few very light "spiders webs", and both sides play almost like new.
Both labels are immaculate.
The edges are completely chip-free.
