60s NORTHERN SOUL
'SECOND ISSUE'
The 70s saw a bewildering number of Northern Soul singles gain a reissue, in one form or another. Some were repressed legally, such as the RCA, Columbia and OKeh singles I've recently put on eBay. Others were given a legitimate UK release for the first (or second, or even third) time. Then there were the 'second issue' 45s - a polite term for the coun?!$feit or bo?!$eg pressings that had their boom period in the mid-70s.
Here's another 70s 'second issue'.

By the time Maurice Williams waxed "Being Without You", his 1960 hit "Stay" was a fading memory. That record had gone all the wat to the top position on the Billboard Hot 100, but Maurice and his group, The Zodiacs, found another hit was a forlorn hope. They lacked "Stay"ing power!
By 1967, Williams was recording for the Deesu label out of New Orleans. "Being Without You" couldn't be any more of a stomper if it had been a Casino Classics tailor-made. Gordon Keith's "Look Ahead" was initially covered up as Maurice Williams for oh-so-obvious reasons. That amazing intro defines old-style 100 mph Northern Soul, and many a nighter has been roused by the immortal first few lines:
"Sugar mama, sugar lips, girl you're so fine".
I hadn't expected this perfect tune to be in The Northern Soul Top 500, but there it is, positioned at a respectable #263. It's in good company, with two similar pounders from The Nomads and Terrible Tom sitting on the opposite page.
"Baby, Baby" is another incredible dancer, and makes for real value, especially if you're forking out three figures for an original. This is a copy of the superb green label coun!?rfeit, as opposed to the red label bo!?leg (which also has a different flip). It's label is a similar dark green to an original, but the lettering is silver, as opposed to gold.
This single is in exceptional condition, the labels are both spotless, and the edges are completely chip-free. It has been played on both sides to verify condition, and comes in my own personalized card cover.
