Record conditon: Very good (both sides play Excellent + to Excellent ++)
Labels condition: Excellent
I picked this one up in a second-hand shop almost exactly thirty years ago, looking all forlorn without a protective cover of any kind. Rosina Ward's second-hand emporium, in Hanley (Stoke-on-Trent), was a favourite destination of many back then. It had thousands of old 45s and LPs for sale at just 5p, as well as lots of books, items of furniture, ornaments, the odd antique, articles of clothing, dead maggots, kitchen utensils, and various other bric-a-brac, all at cut-throat prices. On a separate visit I picked up a very good copy of Terry Callier's "Look At Me Now", before it was well-known, as well as many other great tunes. Since the price was so ridiculously cheap, the condition wasn't much of an issue.
Susan King worked exclusively with Larry Lucie, releasing a total of five singles on his Toy/Turntable/Mid-Town group of labels, between 1963 and 1966. The third was also released simultaneously on Sound Of Memphis Inc., but credited to Lola King; while her final 45 was a fine handling of The Revlons' "(Oh, Oh, Oh) What A Love This Is". Lucie had been a celebrated jazz guitarist during the big band era, and carried on for many years afterwards, as an artist, producer, arranger, songwriter, and label entrepreneur. Other acts who recorded for him include George Smith, The Royal Premiers, Billy Hamlin, Connie McGill & The Visions, Spencer, Vince Carey, Bobby Harris, The Revlons, and Kenny Ballard. Lucie died almost a year ago, at the ripe old age of 101.
The delightful double-sider on offer here was Susan King's penultimate release, some forty-five years ago, and was the first on Toy's Turntable subsidiary. Both tracks have the benefit of a youtube posting, and recent exposure to the masses has seen the price rise to a lot higher than the £25 quoted by both John Manship (2008) and Tim Brown (2009) - and astronimically higher than the piddling 5p it cost me in 1980.
The styrene is covered in light scuffs/"spiders webs", but none of them are more than surface marks. In fact, both sides play at least excellent + to excellent ++ (possibly even higher), and are even quiet during the run-ins and run-outs. Ideal for DJ'ing with, and also suitable for most homes.
Both labels have a smallish amount of light ring-wear.
This record has been played on both sides to verify condition, but there's a full money-back guarantee on all my sales, and I'll refund anyone who isn't totally captivated.
