BLUES SINGER WILLIE COBBS WROTE AND RECORDED "YOU DON'T LOVE ME" IN 1960 FOR CHICAGO'S RULER LABEL, AND IT HAS SINCE BEEN COVERED IN MANY MUSICAL GENRES; POSSIBLY THE BEST-KNOWN OF THEM ALL IS JAMAICAN ARTIST DAWN PENN'S ROCK STEADY TAKE FROM 1967 - LARGELY THROUGH HER RE-RECORDING OF THE TRACK IN 1991, WHEN IT WAS ALTERNATIVELY TITLED "NO, NO, NO"; IN THE HANDS OF BILL MEDLEY PROTEGE JERRY GANEY, THE SONG IS TRANSFORMED INTO A BRASSY, FEMME-BACKED, 'BLUE-EYED' THUMPER, AND A WORTHY FOLLOW-UP TO HIS "JUST A FOOL", WHICH HAD BEEN CUT FOR M-G-M'S SISTER LABEL VERVE THE PREVIOUS YEAR (ANOTHER BILL MEDLEY PRODUCTION, AND CAN'T YOU TELL!); THESE TWO SINGLES ARE THE ONLY OFFERINGS FROM MR. GANEY, EXCEPT FOR A ONE-OFF HE RECORDED WITH THE BREAK OF DAWN IN 1971

B. IT SEEMS THAT IT WAS OBLIGATORY TO DO A VERSION OF TOMMY TUCKER'S R&B EPIC "HI HEEL SNEAKERS" IN THE SIXTIES. AND EVEN IF YOU DIDN'T RECORD THE TRACK, YOU PROBABLY USED IT AT SOME POINT IN YOUR LIVE REPERTOIRE; THE JERRY GANEY VERSION IS AS GOOD AS MANY OUT THERE, ALTHOUGH I'M OF THE OPINION THAT YOU CAN'T BEAT THE ORIGINAL; TOMMY TUCKER WROTE THE TRACK AS WELL, UNDER HIS REAL NAME OF ROBERT HIGGINBOTHAM
