Here is a very rare piece of early recording history. This is a 7" one sided recording of Sousa's Band playing "El Capitan March" dated April 7th 1898 with a release #42YY. I am not even sure what speed this is supposed to be played at but I would guess it is somewhere around 78rpm. I played it at 45 just to judge the surface noise condition. The record is in good condition for it's age. There is only some light scuffing. There are no scratches that can be felt. There are a few very slight rim chips but they are on the back of the disc and do not affect play.When played it has the normal amout of surface hiss expected on a recording of this age but no popping or ticking. These early Sousa recordings are very collectible and bring a nice price. I am starting this one with a low opening bid in true auction fashion. At almost 110 years old this is probably one of the earliest disc recordings. I think most recordings of this era were cylinders.
