Description
Please note that this disc is a modern creation. Unless your last name is Berliner, or you work for a giant institutional archive, this is probably the closest you’ll get to having an original Berliner zinc plate. It’s been made using the original 1890 protocols prescribed by Emile, which were translated into english by Patrick Feaster. A sheet of zinc was cut, trimmed on a machinists lathe, polished and coated in a beeswax solution. The recording was done with an electric recording lathe which only removed the wax to expose the zinc under the area that would become the groove. The disc was then etched in a specialized acid solution to “develop” the groove. It has only been spot played in three areas to ensure that the recording was successful. The results were compared to microscopic images taken of original zinc plates to ensure accuracy of the process. The disc will quickly turn darker grey and the etched areas will appear gold in color, if the disc is not played then the unplayed areas of the groove will also appear gold. It can also be buffed and clear-coated or even plated. This disc is playable, and can be demonstrated on modern equipment or on a vintage wind-up.
Please note that the logo which was applied is of the 1894 style, with handwritten text and the “PHL” area location, where it was actually made (just a few blocks from Berliners original Philadelphia location).
