John Scher sites his booking of the Rolling Stones in June of '78 as a major turning point in the history of the Capitol Theater, establishing it, via the huge media attention generated by the 'Stones notoriety, as a serious rock concert venue, and serving to mend the riff between the city of Passaic and the theater, caused mainly by a general distrust of the young, hip crowd that frequented the place (remember the Generation Gap?). In an interview on NJ.com 2012/01, John Scher four decades of bri., Scher describes his surprise at the display of public affection bestowed upon him by Passaic's Mayor, out in front of the Capitol on the eve of the Stones appearance there (in front of the rolling TV News cameras, of course!)
I had the privilege and honor of accompanying Charlie as his guest at the 40th Reunion of the Capitol Theater, held at NYC's Studio 201 on 12/16/11,the anniversary of Scher's first Capitol concert. There, I was introduced to the great icon of rock concert producers. Wish I had done this research back then. I may have had something intelligent to say, rather than stand there star struck, as I did, while Scher and Charlie chatted and reminisced. Here's the list of Charlie's Stones records, which, not surprisingly are all in beautiful condition. Thanks, Charlie, my old friend. Sure do miss you!
