Marvin Holmes (as he appeared on the cover of the "Ooh Ooh The Dragon And Other Monsters" album, with his earlier group, The Uptights).

Like most people of a certain age, I have fond memories of the steam trains that rattled across the landscape in the younger days - particularly since the Stoke-to-Crewe main line ran a few hundred yards from our back garden. This record serves to remind me of that era, due to it's chuffing, express-like rhythm.

During the late 60s, Marvin Holmes had fronted another group from Oakland, California, called Marvin Holmes & The Uptights. In 1973, he formed the Brown Door label, with his new group (Marvin Holmes & Justice) as the principal act. The label was unusual in that it incorporated the group's LPs into their 45 catalogue system, so that 6573 was an album, while 6574, 6575 and 6576 were all singles. The same was true of the group's next two albums, except by 1974 Brown Door had expanded to include other acts - and some pretty fine (and expensive) one's they were too. The Promatics' "I Think I'm Gonna Let You Go" (6577) books at £500, while Jeanie Tracy's "Making New Friends" (6583) can fetch upwards of £300. Dorothy Morrison's "I Can't Go On Without You" (6580) is no slouch either, while bringing up the rear are titles by Faye Marshall (6582 and the oddly-names John Turk & The Third St. Annex (6584/6585). Number 6581 was Marvin's second album - "Honor Your Father" - which included both sides of the single on offer here.

 Initial copies of "You Better Keep Her" appeared in 1974, and have moulded labels on a vinyl base. These styrene copies date from the following year, when they were used to cater for a demand created at the Blackpool Mecca's Highland Room by Ian Levine. They are therefore legal represses (not count?rfeits), in the same way that the issue copies of The Carstairs' "It Really Hurts Me Girl" are 1974 re-presses (true 1973 originals only appeared as white promo's). The flip - "Kwami" - is an unrelated instrumental.

A. One of the finest uptempo shufflers from the mid-70s; memorable chorus: "open up the door to your heart, be smart, you better keep her"; listen in full via the above youtube link (not taken from the copy for sale).

B. Hypnotic jazz-funk; mid-tempo guitar instrumental, with catchy flute and violin intro.

The styrene has a tiny handful of very light "spiders webs" only, and is mostly unmarked (visual condition). Both sides play almost like new (sound quality).

Both labels have a light degree of bubbling, more pronounced on the scanned side.

I use second-hand mailers for almost all of my sales, in order to keep packing costs down, but the majority are sent by 'signed for' delivery (fully inclusive in the P&P cost).
