Sorry I'm a bit vague with the above dating, but the only info I have to go on is that Carl Hall became an early victim of the AIDS virus in the late 80s. Unlike the vast majority of his peers, he never once worked for an obscure company during the entire ten-year length of his solo recording life. That doesn't mean that his material is easy to find - far from it. None of his six Mercury singles are cheap, with three of them often being booked at £100 or above. My personal favourite is "You're So Qualified" from 1966, but you won't really put a foot wrong with any of them. Mr. Hall's next move was to Warner Brothers Records - more specifically to it's soul subsidiary, Loma, where he stayed for two singles. The first has to be sought out on a yellow issue in order to get the quality "Mean It Baby"; I'm selling a copy of the second Loma 45 elsewhere on eBay at the mo.
After a short hiatus, one single for Atlantic followed in 1972, with his final release appearing on Columbia the next year. That title ("What About You") is perfect example of crossover soul, and now his most in-demand number.
Here's a mint copy of it's Escrow reissue, now almost ten years old.
Both labels are immaculate.
