78 RPM - EKKO Records, Hollywood, California - Gus Bivona jazz on a very uncommon translucent red 1950s label.

EKKO Records was a small record label in Hollywood, California mostly noted for pressing many of the early Cochran Brothers, Al Dexter, Eddie Bond, Buddy Griffin, Riley Crabtree, Jess Willard, and Eddie Cochran early Rockabilly and Rock 'n' Roll records. Like many small labels, it lasted only a few short years in the mid-late '50s. EKKO records are truly collectible and I suspect this translucent red promotional 'Not For Sale' record is very rare - probably even more so since it is a 78 and not a 45. The vinyl record is very thin and pliable.

Arcuiso 'Gus' Bivona was a big band and jazz musician who played clarinet and saxophone for Benny Goodman, Glen Gray and The Caso Loma Orchestra, Bunny Berigan and His Boys, and had his own orchestra. In later life, he was also an orchestra musician in orchestras that backed Elvis Presley, Ella Mae Morse, Frank Sinatra, Charlie Christian, Doris Day, Dean Martin, and Frankie Laine. He even had a cameo appearance on the Andy Griffith show a as part of a traveling band. As one would expect of a jazz/swing group made up mostly of reeds and horns, these are both lively jazz renditions featuring Bivona.

The band is comprised of C. Gozzo, U. Rasey, J. Triscari, and R. Linn on Trumpet; S. Zenter, J. Howard, and B. Benson on Trombone; L. Robinson, T. Nash, D. Lodice, and M. Friedman on Saxophone; R. Callender, M. Raskin, F. Carlson, J. Marchall on Rhythm - Arranged by Raskin.

EK-107 - 'Querida' - this side is E+ to M-, a couple very light, very short hair scratches.

EK-108 - 'Organ Grinders Swing' - this side is E, several scuffs and scrapes, no digs or scratches.

Plays without skipping on my Dual 1218 turntable. Sound is clear with only a slight hiss.

My grading scale is not complicated. Mint (M, M-) means like new with only the slightest of scuffing. Excellent (E, E+, E-) means minor scuffs, scrapes, label wear, light scratches that do not affect the play. Good (G, G+, G-) means scuffing, scraping, scratches, acceptable playing with noticible noise. I try not to sell records that are warped or that skip unless noted. These are records I have picked up while expanding my own record collection.
