What we have up for auction here is a wonderful rare recording of  N.Koufianos performing two Syrtos Dances & accompanied by Cretan Lyre & Cymbale.

Nicholas Katsulis or Koufianos (Sfakia origin), was born in 1877 in Coufo Cydonia Chania. From his place of origin, therefore, was to be called Koufianos

Koufianos was one of the most skillful lyre players of his time and an excellent singer. He was also a great connoisseur of the Cretan musical tradition and especially Chaniotika motifs and pentozali. In pentozali, as legend has it today, he was unique!

He played in numerous celebrations of his time and entertained thousands of people, who deified him in every instance both in Crete and Athens. In Splantzia in Chania, was one of the good places and connoisseurs from around the prefecture of Chania, but also from other areas of Crete ran to hear the great lyra player.

Legendary Koufianos died in 1947. He left behind him many imitators, the pure music tradition, great skill and the sweetness of his playing, which is rare today. Perhaps, these are the elements that have established him as one of the best masters of the lyre ever bore the Cretan land.

EXCELLENT: "EX" The record shows some signs of having been played but there is very little lessening in sound quality.

VERY GOOD: "VG" The record has obviously been played many times but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch.

GOOD: "G" Record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches.

FAIR:"F" Just playable.

POOR: "P" Will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise etc.

BAD: "B" The record is unplayable or might even be broken.
