BACKGROUND: For your consideration is this beautiful and old 78 rpm picture record.  I found this record in my grandparent's house as it was being cleaned and their estate was being settled.  It was in a back closet, in an old paper shopping bag stored with some Vogue picture records.  Research suggests that this disc was made about 1933 or so and, being released during the Depression, is somewhat rare.  I have no idea how my grandparent's ended up with it; they may have bought it new.  At any rate, it is a fascinating item and would make a great addition to any record collection!

DESCRIPTION: This item is 12 inches in diameter, plays at 78 rpm, and has black-and-white pictures on both sides. 

The "A" side of 39003 features selections from "As Thousands Cheer" as played by Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra.  They are playing "How's Chances", "Suppertime" (vocal by Ramona), "Easter Parade" (vocal by Jack Fulton), and "Not For All The Rice In China" (vocal by  Ramona).  There is a picture of Clifton Webb and Marilyn Miller dancing at right, a "potato-head" drawing of Paul Whiteman at top, and at right middle is a head shot of Irving Berlin, who wrote these songs.

The "B" side of 39003 features selections from "Let 'Em Eat Cake" as played by Paul Whiteman.  The tunes on this side include "Mine" (vocal by Bob Lawrence), Let 'Em Eat Cake, Union Square (vocal Bob Lawrence and Rhythm Boys), On and On and On (vocal by Rhythm Boys), and Mine (vocals Bob Lawrence and Ramona).  There are head shots of William Gaxton, Lois Moran, and Victor Moore.  At the top are two small head shots of George and Ira Gershwin, who wrote these songs.

CONDITION: This item is graded visually and would grade V+ to V (very good).  Both sides show random light surface scratches and wear.  However, the images are still clear and vibrant, there are no visible deep scratches, outside chips, or cracks through the record, and the playing surface is still very shiny and bright on both sides.

On the "Cheer" side, there is a small 1/2 inch lamination crack (not through the record) at the 7 o'clock position and some discoloration at the top through the Whiteman caricature; it is about 5 inches long and seems to be underneath the playing surface.  There are two chips (each about the size of the top of a pencil eraser) and a 1/2 inch lamination crack all around the center hole.  It seems as if the vinyl is a littled bubbled up around this area.  The other images are not affected.

On the "Cake" side, there is a prominent 1-1/2 inch lamination crack (not through the record) at the 2 o'clock position and one small circular chip around half of the center hole.  There is slight discoloration under the picture at the 7 o'clock position and a light pink discoloration at the 1 o'clock position.  There is also a square light pink stain in the center (usually the label area).  None of the images are affected. 

This is still an attractive item and, for its age, is in decent condition.  It would make a great display!
