This is one of several old 78 RPM FRENCH DANCE ORCHESTRS TEST PRESSINGS that I will be listing. I have no idea who the Orchestra is, or the players featured on them. They could be a real find for someone who knows their history! One sided...
Love this one! This record starts off with fine ensemble that is tight and well played. There's an interlude with a trumpet break, and you can tell that Bix Beiderbecke's records had found a home and fans in France. The piano is hot too! This is followed be a male and female vocal in harmony. A four bar turn around leads into a damned fine trumpet solo..also Bix inspired. A couple hot choruses with sections of solos...the trombone guy doing his best Bill Rank effort and doing nothing to be ashamed of, as well as the sax man, who has an interesting style somewhat between Frank Trumbauer and very early Bud Freeman. Very interesting to hear!
Ok...Here's what I know about these recordings. I can't speak French and haven't a clue who are on these records I'm listing. About 25 years ago, I was at a huge flea market in Paris. I came upon a booth that had a few records in it. They seemed to be test pressings so I bought them. The guy then said, "Would you like more of these?" Well, ok...if you insist. Pulls out a box with about 30 more test pressings. The price was more than right. He then told me his father had made these recordings. I asked him what instrument his father played. Answer..none. He was the engineer who recorded them. His father passed away many years before, and this guy said he had a cellar full of these that he would like to get rid of! My heart sank because I was going back to the U.S. the next day. When I got back and played them...Wow! I wish I could have bought them all. And they were close to perfect in condition.
No scratches, and almost flawless - nothing that compromises the sound at all. Sounds wonderful! I'll be listing quite a few old 78RPM records from a huge collection, so keep checking my listings.
