ARTIST: Vic Berton leading a quartet

DESCRIPTION:
Special vanity pressing for Vic Berton which probably dates from the mid-1930s. It's a 12" one-sided (Victor spider pattern on back) shellac 78 that plays inside out. Etched around label are VIC'S VIBRATIONS SPECIAL VIC'S VARIATIONS, and at outside edge musicians names are etched as follows (with some misspellings): VIC BURTON - EDDIE STOCKBRIDGE - SMEAR LOFTY - RUSS CHEEVERS. Undoubtedly recorded in Los Angeles where Berton and reedman Russ Cheever lived, the music is a hot, tasteful "Tiger Rag" with Cheever on clarinet, bass, guitar, and multi-talented Berton, who switches to vibes after a one note bass drum opening and is as good as any vibes player of the period. Grooves show some visual wear with no impact on sound, which is clear and crisp with silent surface.
