Description
This is a 3-disc set of 78rpm records, issued by Asch records, called "Music of the Russian Middle East."
It features performances of music from different parts of Uzbekistan, Armenia, and the Republic of Georgia - although it was pointed out on the excellent Excavated Shellac blog that the purportedly Georgian "Song of Stalin" is, in fact, in Azeri, and probably not about Stalin. In addition, the Armenian Turkish musicians heard on another selection have distinctly Georgian names. The provenance of the recordings is unknown but they are stellar and, in some cases, quite haunting. Some of the songs were not included in Folkways' 1951 reissue of the album.
