HIS MAJESTY KING GEORGE V's Speech 
at the Opening Ceremony of
THE TYNE BRIDGE - 10th October 1928

Not to be confused with the recently released film The King's Speech
starring Colin Firth as King George VI and Geoffrey Rush as Lionel Logue,
this is a vintage 78 rpm 12" record featuring King George VI's FATHER,
George V, and his proclamation at the historic opening of The Tyne Bridge
in 1928 linking Gateshead and Newcastle.

Side One: The Speech of HIS MAJESTY KING GEORGE V at the opening ceremony of THE TYNE
BRIDGE (recorded in the Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead-on-Tyne, 10th October 1928.
Side Two: ADDRESS OF WELCOME TO HM KING GEORGE V by William Swinbourne (Town Clerk, Co. Borough of Gateshead).

At 84 years old it is an achievement in itself that such a fragile account of social and Royal history should have survived this long. The record is in superb condition and the speech is perfectly audible when played on the appropriate equipment, I have heard it played and can guarantee it.

The inner land area on side one of the record features an attractive engraving of the Tyne Bridge and the respective coats of arms of Newcastle and Gateshead. An image below has been over-exposed to illustrate these fine engravings in more detail.

Also surviving in near perfect condition is its original paper sleeve which only due to creases in each of the four corners prevents me from describing it as perfect or pristine.

ABOUT THE TYNE BRIDGE
Opened on 10th October 1928, the Tyne Bridge is also a reminder of challenges facing the region in the 1920s. The world no longer needed Tyneside's industrial capacity, and the construction of the bridge was an unemployment relief scheme. In this recording the King remarks, 'I pray that with God's blessing, more prosperous times may soon return, and that your trade may reap the benefit of these improved communications.'

Constructed by Dorman, Long & Company of Middlesbrough the image of the Tyne Bridge is recognised worldwide celebrating the North East England's one-time pre-eminence in the iron and steel industry. It symbolises the pride in engineering skills which, in the 19th century, had established the North East's reputation on an international scale. 
The Bridge contains more than 7,000 tonnes of steel connected by ¾ million rivets.

The record will be appropriately packaged to prevent damage in transit, hence cost of packaging.

I make every effort to be as accurate as possible in both dating and the description of the item upon the information to hand at the time.
