Description
RCA Victor DM-1024 78 rpm set of three in original cover folder. "The Isle of the Dead", composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff, Played by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Serge Koussevitzky. Extra composition on side 6: "Vocalise", orchestrated by Rachmaninoff especially for Koussevitsky's concerts in Moscow during the season of 1915-16, which reveals the close friendship of these two great men.
"Isle of the Dead, Op. 29" is a Symphonic Poem after Arnold Boecklin's painting that is reproduced on the cover. Composed in 1907 (Rachmaninoff's 24th year), the composition received its first American performance in 1909 by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. This recording was done after Rachmaninoff's death (1943). I am not sure of the actual date of the recording, but Koussevitzky conducted the Boston Symphony Orchestra only until 1949.
