78 rpm: Songs Sung by Woody Guthrie - Asch Recordings #347 (1944) 3 Record Set (78 RPM) w/Jacket

We are offering a three record set of Woody Guthrie songs on the Asch label.

All records are 78 rpm, and we believe original to Guthrie's session with Moses Asch in the 1944 - 1945 timeframe.

All records do show wear or use, but all three play fine.

Included are: 347 1A - Talking Sailor; 347 1B - Coolee Dam; 347 2A - Ranger's Command; 347 2B - Gypsy Davy; 347 3A - Jesus Christ; and 347 3B - NY Town.

All six cuts are Guthrie classics, and the lyrics appear inside the front jacket cover - while the inside back cover contains Guthrie's first person summation of each song.

As an added bonus - the top of the page inside the front cover contains a preface by John Steinbeck, and we quote "Harsh voiced and nasal, his guitar hanging like a tire iron on a rusty rim, there is nothing sweet about Woody, and there is nothing sweet about the songs he sings. But there is something more important for those who will listen. There is the will of a people to endure and fight against oppression. I think we call this the American spirit."

Also as a bonus is a catalogue and pricelist of ASCH-STINSON RECORDS from this time.

Songs of Woody Guthrie Asch Album A-347 Among Woody's earliest recordings, 1944 Guthrie himself painted the jacket image and wrote the extensive liner notes inside the cover. Inside the back cover are the lyrics and an essay on Woody by John Steinbeck.

This is scarce. From Goldmine ...

"One of the first Guthrie releases. The six songs on this 78-rpm album were recorded in a flurry of activity in April 1944, during which Guthrie, along with various musical friends such as Leadbelly and Sonny Terry, recorded at least 150 sides for Asch Records.

"Moses Asch, the co-owner of the label and who later founded Folkways Records, didn’t have the resources to issue so many recordings at once. The album 'Songs By Woody Guthrie' was released near the end of 1944 or at the beginning of 1945. Asch Records went bankrupt in 1947 which resulted in this album going out of print."
