Description
This is a set of three RCA Program Transcription discs, L-11601, 11602 and 11603, of Carlo Sabanjo leading the La Scala Orchestra and Chorus in Pietro Mascagni's opera "Cavalleria Rusticana." This recording was made at La Scala in Milan in March-April 1929 and also issued on 12" 78 rpm as RCA album set CM-103. Soloists include soprano Delia Sanzio, contralto Olga De Franco, tenor Giovanni Breviario and baritone Piero Biasini. Although it may be slightly condensed, these three 33 rpm discs contain the whole opera. It is a Vitrolac pressing which is a kind of early vinyl record, and therefore it should not be played with a heavy pickup on a vintage phonograph, though on modern players a wider stylus such as those used for 78s would be preferable. Overall the discs are in very good shape; L-11601 A has a single, very light scuff with a small number of light static scratches; L-11601 B has some static scratches in the runout, but is otherwise clean; L-11602 is a beautiful and very lightly used disc; L-11603 has a small scratch on the A side, but L-11603 B is the most difficult side with a rough opening and some light trailing scratches that lead to the center label, where in the second scan you can see a needle came to light and left a groove in the label.
