Description
Abdu'l Baha (1844-1921) was the eldest son of Baha'i faith founder Baha'u'llah. He became his father's successor as leader of the faith despite opposition within the family. He was freed from house arrest in Istanbul in 1908 and began to travel. In 1912, he visited the USA, after he had declined an offer of passage on the RMS Titanic. He recorded this custom record, manufactured by the Columbia Graphophone Co. Columbia had been making custom records for clients for years. This particular recording would be issued with at least two different styles of label, suggesting the Baha'i Assembly continued to order copies. However, I would say this is the first label under which it appeared.
This record will play on a Victrola, Graphophone, Gramophone, Brunswick, Sonora, Berliner, Victor Talking Machine, Zonophone or on modern audio equipment. It is important to understand the way in which Columbia discs were produced. Unlike Victor, Brunswick, Paramount, Okeh, Black Patti and other types of 78rpm discs, Columbias were laminated. They had a "sandwich" of shellac, with a paper core. For this reason, they occasionally develop what we know as "fissures." THESE ARE NOT CRACKS. The upper or lower layer of shellac can "split" slightly, but the separation does not go clear through. Often you can see an impression of the fissure on the opposite side of the disc, but, unlike cracks, any separation does not go all the way through. This disc has two fissures. One is very minor, the other a bit more prominent, though the record plays well, with a slight "tick" caused by the more prominent fissure. Otherwise the surface is in E condition. Very little wear. Sound quality is excellent, chanting in Persian. The reverse side is impressed with Columbia's "Note the Notes" logo. 10" diameter.
