Description
For your consideration, a rare treat for the vintage record and radio show collector, Lone Ranger fans, and also those who like to cut their own records. These are eight 16-inch transcription acetate discs (Soundcraft brand). These are part of a collection of 16" records that included many from WXYZ radio in Detroit, which was the station that created and produced the original Lone Ranger radio show. Four of these records have parts of The Lone Ranger episode "Hired for Murder" and are dated 2-23-51. The other four have parts of the episode "The Dead Outlaw" and are dated 2-21-51. All of the records have recording on one side and are blank on the other sides. There are hand-written notes on the recording sides.
The recordings themselves are kind of strange. There is no intro or theme song, and the parts of the program are split up (you can see the rings in the pictures). Because these probably came from WXYZ, I have a hunch that they are test recordings, either to get the levels right, or perhaps to do different scene takes. As near as I can tell the programs are complete except for the theme, intro, etc., although I can't say for sure. There are actually two of each record. That is, each record has a twin, so you really have two copies of each episode, even though they are labeled differently (such as 1B, 1A, 2A, and 2B).
I don't grade records. These look ok for 65 year-old acetates. A lot of the dots you see in the pictures is just dust. I wiped my hand on the blank side of one disc and it got much cleaner. One of them is badly chipped on the outside edge (pictured). The others are much better. I played the records all the way through and they sound very good. Played inside out, 33-rpm. There are four sleeves with some writing on them. Some are ripped, some just worn through on the bottom and sides. Please keep in mind that you'd need a large record player in order to actually play these; most only accommodate 12" records. I have some other Lone Ranger/other program transcriptions that I'll be selling soon, but these are some of the few acetates and the only ones that can still be recorded on on the other sides.
