« Les quatre double albums de la célèbre série V.S.O.P. (Very Special Old Phonography) – dont les sept premiers disques ont été réalisé par Kurt Mohr – présentent par ordre chronologique l’œuvre intégrale enregistrée par Louis Armstrong et sous son nom, de 1925 à 1932, à Chicago, New-York ou Los Angelès. Il s’agit de la période la plus créatrice du grand soliste, celle ou véritablement il fait le jazz, aussi bien au plan instrumental que vocal. Les soli qu’il improvise au cours de ces années on été la source d’inspiration de tous les musiciens de jazz, qu’ils soient instrumentistes, chanteurs ou orchestrateurs. En fait, Louis Armstrong dépasse le cadre même du jazz. Disparu en 1971, il demeure l’une des figures les plus représentatives de la musique du XXème siècle ».
