Description
A Band of Angels
Invitation
Very Rare original UK 7" single released on Piccadilly Records in 1966. 1st UK pressing complete with push out center and original company sleeve.
Formed in 1964 at Harrow Public School, England, A Band Of Angels comprised Michael D’Abo (b. 1 March 1944, Betchworth, Surrey, England; vocals/piano), Christian (John) Gaydon (guitar/vocals), John Baker (guitar), David Wilkinson (bass) and James Rugge-Price (drums). The band made great play of their ‘upper class’ origins, wearing matching sleek suits and straw boater hats in publicity photographs. They signed to United Artists Records in 1964, and recorded ‘Me’ and ‘She’ll Never Be You’ for the company before switching to Piccadilly Records. ‘Leave It To Me’ was issued in 1965 and a year later the group completed their last, and finest, single, ‘Invitation’. A strong beat and nagging chorus led to its becoming a favourite on the northern soul scene of the 70s. D’Abo replaced Paul Jones in Manfred Mann in 1966, while John Gaydon became a successful entrepreneur in partnership with ex-A Band Of Angels manager David Enthoven. Together they formed EG Records, home of Roxy Music, King Crimson and Brian Eno.
