Description
VERY RARE ORIGINAL 1969 pressing of this sought-after album by Fresh Air, “A Breath of Fresh Air”, on the Amaret label. Don’t be fooled by the misleading name – if Fresh Air were a Saturday morning cartoon character, it’d be a Power Puff Girl – all breezy and colorful on the outside but capable of unleashing a hellish maelstrom of power at the drop of a beat. Why any band so intent of filling every nook and cranny of a song with funky wah wah guitar and ripping fuzz guitar would choose to call themselves “Fresh Air” is a mystery to me – maybe they were marketed as an environmentally conscious musical alternative to the Smoke and Heir: Pollution. At any rate, any actual fresh air present during one of the band’s concerts would likely be ripped asunder by the shredding fuzz guitar that powers “Sleeping in Sunshine”, whose pulsating siren-like melody is torn apart in great electric chunks by an angry spitting pit bull with six strings and a fuzz pedal. In a way, it reminds me a lot of the heavier moments on the Zoo’s “Presents Chocolate Moose” album. Any fresh air present during the 4 minutes of “Faces in the Fire” would be used to fan Satan’s flames, as this is one EVIL echoed-out slab of black leather psych rock. Half CCR’s “Keep on Chooglin”” and half Steppenwolf’s “Magic Carpet Ride”, infused with the spirit of Anton LaVey and laced with some GREAT scratchy funk guitar and an even GREATER liquidy wah wah solo, this’ll have you looking for Satanic messages in the clouds on the front cover. The awe-inspiring “December” opens up with a big dramatic organ solo followed by some heavy fuzz guitar chords, then settles into the closest thing here approaching the fluffy puffs of paisley smoke on the sleeve, drifting by on a steady, patient metronomic rhythm. It’s the calm before the storm, of course, because once that chorus hits, so does a windstorm of fuzz, and if this is supposed to be fresh air, then it’s in the form of a hurricane. “December”’s mystical, trippy verses recall the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band’s version of “Smell of Incense”, or even the trance-like epics of the Doors (“The End”, “When the Music’s Over”). So if you’re expecting a burst of bright and breezy sunshine pop out of THIS Fresh Air, guess again. Because this time, the air is THICK with fuzz. Original 1969 pressing on the Amaret label. Cover very clean VG++ with some clear tape on seams and a small price sticker on the front cover.
