Offered for auction is a 'contract' pressing of the Australia LP, A Collection of Beatles Oldies.
In specific regard to Australia Beatles vinyl, a 'contract pressing' is a disc manufactured for E.M.I. (Australia) by another company, when E.M.I. (Australia) pressing plants were working to full capacity and simply could not meet production targets on their own. On several occasions throughout the 1960's, 70's and 80's, E.M.I. (New Zealand) manufactured Beatles LP's exclusively for the Australia market (New Zealand collectors refer to such vinyl as 'export pressings').
Contract pressings were generally housed in Australia sleeves; but sometimes would be issued in New Zealand sleeves.
The labels of 'contract', or 'export', status of such pressings from the 1960's featured textual reference to their origin (e.g. "manufactured by H.M.V. (New Zealand) for E.M.I. (Australia)", or such-like). This prominent 'contract' reference was removed for 70's/80's contract pressings, making their origin merely less obvious.
A 1-Box 'contract pressing', such as is offered in this listing, can be identified by the presence of the Australia catalogue prefix, PCSO (the NZ prefix is PCSM), in conjunction with the New Zealand '1-Box' logo style ; and also the words, "MADE IN N.Z. BY EMI (NEW ZEALAND) LIMITED", in the rim-text at the top of the label. All such identifiers are illustrated in one of the images published in this listing (see above).
The contract/export pressing of ...Oldies is a special case among from the Australia perspective because it is possible that no locally-manufactured copy of ...Oldies, with Australia silver/black 1-box labels, was ever produced in the three years between the introduction of the silver/black 1-box label and the 'relegation' of ...Oldies to the budget Axis label.
Every Australia/New Zealand Beatles collector should have a set of contract/export titles in their collection.
CONDITION - VINYL
Vinyl grades at VG+ to EX. Record looks to have been only occasionally played. Vinyl is flat as a tapeworm trampled by a herd of overweight pachiderms fleeing a particularly-frightening rodent.
CONDITION - LABELS
labels grade at VG+ to EX. The apparent 'damage' around the spindle is actually a manufacturing deficiency. The visible 'scratch', evident on both labels, is actually a scratched bit of scanner-glass.
CONDITION - SLEEVE
Sleeve grades at GOOD due to a signiicant split to the top seam; but as this is a 'standard' Australia EMI sleeve, replacements are plentiful and cheap.
