A Certain Ratio - "All Night Party" / "The Thin Boys" (Factory FAC 5)
This is ACR's first single, released in 1979. It was only the second music release on Factory Records after the "Factory Sampler". (FAC numbers 1, 3 and 4 were posters!) Beautifully produced - if you don't mind looking at a repeated image of Lenny Bruce's dead body - and with typical Factory idiosyncrasies: the two sides of the single are not labelled A and B, but 'Lenny' and 'Anthony' (Perkins).
As for the music, this is the only recording made by the original four-piece lineup of ACR. The significance of that is the original four members of the band didn't include a drummer: this band was a very different proposition to the dance-oriented ACR we later knew and loved. Moody, noisy, menacing, but without a beat to speak of, "All Night Party" sounds a bit like Joy Division, a bit like Bauhaus and a lot like Wire.
The condition of the vinyl is Near Mint. The sleeve is only VG+, with some visible shelf-wear - no more than you'd expect for a record of this vintage.
Totally unobtainable, currently changing hands for silly money. If you miss this one you could have a long wait.
