Description
cover has some minor shelf wear, ring wear just barely evident on back. No seam tears. name written in ink on back lower right corner.
clear poly sleeve, wrinkled but no tears.
vinyl with some static clinging dust, a few hairline scuffs. Possibly a finger smudge but I think that's part of the vinyl. Visually grading VG to VG-
This lp is from my personal collection purchased used some time from the late 70s through the early 2000s. Only selling these off as I am downsizing and have not spun these in ages.
My general grading guidelines:
SS - STILL SEALED in original packaging
M MINT I don’t ever grade anything mint.
NM NEAR MINT near mint, appears rarely played, no externally caused marks on vinyl surface, some static clinging dust
EX EXCELLENT minimal marks, but there will be some hairline scuffs, no wide marks and no deep marks. Scuffs visible only under a bright pinpoint light, with soft window light you may see no marks. A fingerprint smudge or two which can be cleaned. No marks that I would anticipate being audible.
VG VERY GOOD handfuls of hairline scuffs, possibly a shallow wider mark or two. Expect a repeated tick here or there. Finger smudges may be present
G GOOD hairline scuffs distributed throughout the lp sides, wider and possibly deeper marks, scratches may be present. Possibly difficult to clean fingerprints or grime. Fully expect marks to be audible and above average surface noise
F FAIR scratches, scuffs and generally in poor shape. Expect high levels of surface noise intruding on the music.
I will add a “+” or “-” to these ratings for fine tuning.
Vinyl material is not always consistently colored and variations in the appearance of vinyl can appear to be surface marks. I often note these if they appear to be distracting when evaluating an lp.
I was a manic record collector and audiophile from the mid 70s through the early 2000s and amassed a collection in the thousands. My main focus was on the listening experience so I tend to be critical of vinyl condition and less concerned with the cover and packaging. Thus I will rate lps on a scale but simply describe the cover defects as best as I can see.
In general lps are going to have surface noise so if you seek dead quiet backgrounds stick with digital playback. It has been my experience that brand new lps can sound noisier than discs that have been played repeatedly and the quality of the vinyl material can make a huge difference in noise. Mobile Fidelity’s JVC vinyl from Japan has been consistently the quietest vinyl I have experienced. US pressings from the 80s and 90s generally are noisier than their European and Japanese counterparts. So something I rate as visually EX in a US pressing can very well have more surface noise than a VG copy of the same title pressed in the UK. These observations are from my experience on top notch playback decks from Ariston or VPI with associated high end tonearms and properly aligned cartridges. Your experience may vary, but be aware vinyl is intrinsically noisy and some vinyl is noisier than others.
