I only saw her perform twice.
On stage, when she walked out, you'd swear she was mainline Connecticut. Maybe a Vassar girl, Bryn Mawr. Then, well, she'd start to play, and go entirely someplace else.
Looking down, leaning over the front of her cello, she would at first scowl at the bowing, as if to beg more of the notes. Her head would bob, her face aglare, her eyes saying, "Where are you?!!"
Helpless in our seats, we were mere witnesses to the great battle on. But then it came -- oh yes -- she knew it would, she now helpless, slowly leaning back, chin floating up and to the side, eyes closed, legs splayed, astride upon the song….
Jacqueline du Pre only played this way for a very short time. She was mercilessly diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which robbed her talent and eventually took her life at the age of 42.
This is a recital LP put together by EMI, that features her cello playing of Paradis, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Faure, Bach, Saint-Saens, Falla, and Bruch, with notables the likes of Gerald Moore, John Williams, and Roy Jesson (organ).
A special LP, released by Angel in the US, pressed on this side of the Pond by Capitol, here in a cover without major fault, record within should play near mint.
Surely among us are great artists who stand by the fire, but only a few, a scant few, step right in.

Boxes over 4 lbs., add another $6, because First Class is no longer available at that weight, just Priority Mail. Note, too, boxed sets of LPs require more postage.
