BIRMINGHAM SUNDAY 'A Message From Birmingham Sunday' LP (Russia, Vinyl Lovers, Catalogue #900830) Brand new/unplayed copy of limited Vinyl Lovers label LP edition of mega-rare 1968 folk-pop/vocal harmony psych album from L.A. based (originally from Carson City, Nevada) band Birmingham Sunday.

'Formed by some high-school friends from Carson City, Nevada, the band began playing clubs around the state in the late sixties, and soon landed a contract with Bill Holmes' (Strawberry Alarm Clock's producer) label, All American. This teenage band played mostly folk-influenced psych, with beautiful male/female vocal harmonies rising above the music (which featured Doors-ifluenced organ playing and some wind instruments as well). The album was originally released as a test pressing, and the impossibly-rare original copies have been known to sell for mind-boggling prices.'
'Very rare LP on this infamous label, has been hyped as a 'psych monster' but is more of a typical LA vocal harmony lyte-psych artifact. Past this initial let-down the album still has things going for it that makes it worth checking out. There's 3-4 tracks in a Growing Concern-alike style that fits the band perfectly; mid-tempo minor chord folk-tinged tunes such as the great "Wondering What To Feel". The rich vocal harmonies work both ways, on the strong tracks they provide a powerful feel, while the weaker tracks sound bland and exploitative. There's some fuzz leads, unexpected use of saxophone, delightfully silly 'drug' lyrics, and an overall feel of a vocal harmony group who tried injecting a freak factor into their music as the times were-a-changing.
