Original soundtracks are a great way of reliving the best moments of a favorite film. By their very nature, they appeal to a limited audience and generally sold in very limited quantities. Sometimes you almost wonder if the soundtrack album was some sort of contractual duty, and if the company ever promoted it's sale at all.

This album is from the 1958 Orson Welles / Charlton Heston / Janet Leigh film A Touch Of Evil. In the movie, this music isn't simply background music, it comes pouring out of jukeboxes, a radio, or in some cases a player piano or an orchestra.

This score was composed by Henry Mancini and is a mixture of up-to-date (1958) rock & roll, and Latin-jazz themes. It was necessary to capture the feel of a steamy stay in a Mexican border town. The film was a tale of narcotics intrigue along the border. A series of scenes of murders and seamy characters lead to a climax that cannot be anticipated, but is inescapable. Orson Welles is the murderous cop, Charlton Heston is the special investigator for the Mexican Government, and Janet Leigh is his American wife.

Orson Welles directed the film from his own screen play based on the Whit Masterson novel. This is on Challenge records #602 (the original issue!) and is indeed a challenge to find in any condition, at any price. Don't let it slip by.
