Description

Here's a rare opportunity to a copy of the first press, mono, that was released in March, 1963.  The sound is great and so is the music, which includes some wonderful slow ballads like Body and Soul, Sweet and Lovely, and Just a Gigolo (the last one was more or less Monk's theme song).
The run-out codes indicate that this copy comes from the very first release:

  • Matrix / Runout (Side 1 stamped variant 3): P XLP-58380-1J
  • Matrix / Runout (Side 2 stamped variant 3): O XLP-58381-1F

It's all played in the inimitable Monk style with slightly off beat metre, typically slow tempos, and often two keys struck at once to create bluesy bent notes like on the blues guitar.  His wife Nellie gave him the affectionate nickname Melodious Thunk.  To me, Monk's music so deep and rich that it never gets old.
This album doesn't just show off Monk's brilliant playing. The quartet includes great performances by Charlie Rouse on tenor, John Ore on bass, and Frankie Dunlop on drums.
PACKING FOR SHIPPING:  All of our LPs are bubble-wrapped and mailed in heavy LP boxes with the vinyl in a protective plastic-lined sleeve placed outside the jacket.
